why you shouldn't dream up really cool assignments for the current crop of undergrad college students

Fact:
The more interesting and fun and original the assignment seems on your end, the more ways students will find to fuck it up, blow portions of it off, and basically phone-it-in instead of having fun and fulfilling it in good faith much less actually using their imagination and creativity.

Heaven forbid anyone try having a pleasant time with anything school-related, even if it's your major! (This outburst being -for once- in reaction not to poor bedraggled 1st and 2nd year requirement-fulfilling students but to those who are supposedly serious about French and even did the summer abroad program.)

This is way sadder than negativity and apathy from the requirement people. I always thought it was because I was always teaching core curriculum that things got so sucky at times. I used to envy people who were able to deal with Majors in their classes. I just KNEW that had to be, well, if not an Absolute Blast, then at least leagues more pleasant than all the non-majors glaring at me day in/day out.

Finding out that majors are just as lame (and therefore even more disappointing) as anyone is more tragic than I can say. Wish I could go back and take the Blue Pill.

Next time I mention returning to retail it will be WAY less of a joke than before.
