instructor ≠ mom

This is the post where those of you who stayed with me all this time and agreed with me for the most part will at last think, "Wow, she really IS a bitch."

Katie was the last person in my last section of test takers today and as she started to leave she said, "There are two French books left back there; do you want me to get them for you?"
"Um, no, I'll see if they have names in them; there are lots of other French classes in here."
"And then what?"
"If they do, I'll email the people; if not then I'll leave them there."
"Can't you take them somewhere?"
What I should have said: "Can't YOU take them somewhere if you're so worried?"
What I said:

"Thru the years of dealing with forgotten books various ways, I've realized the best thing is to leave them alone. Usually students remember and return to the scene and if they don't, the janitors will take left items to Lost & Found."
"Can't you take them upstairs?"
"9 times out of 10, the book is left in the main office for weeks until the secretaries finally email me and ask me to please take them away; that the student has still not retrieved it, so no, I'm not going to take them upstairs."
"Well they do cost $140 each."
Which is why people should be more responsible and not forget their frigging book in a classroom, no?

For the record, neither book had a name in it or any writing whatsoever. Call me prejudiced but that tells me the students don't care much about the class or their books.
