for the record

Someone mentioned that my comments seemed pretty self-denigrate-y in the last post so I wanted to clarify that while I do indeed know and admit that I have been influential in a good way for a fair number of students over the years, the way I was looking at this situation was as my influence's potential effect on the student's getting the job... Aside from the fact that good references are great to have obviously, I read her "influential" as dealing with my personal perceived power or clout towards the hiring people, not towards the student herself.
