oh THAT'S what that is!

Rob, one of my 2020s, has yet to complete any homework and claimed ignorance that either of the quizzes they've had so far was going to take place. Today he remarked again how he didn't understand how to tell when various things were happening in class. I gamely answered that I'd be happy to show him after class to try to clarify things. This, despite the fact that the syllabus is one of the simpler ones I've created in my career and I was at a loss as to how he could possibly not understand it.

Here's an example of the entry for a class day:

1/19/10
In class: Quiz (Ch. 3, Lesson I), Ch. 3 Lesson 2
Due today: Workbook pp. 14-18: D-H

It's one of those cases where the simplest way to explain it is already written on the paper, so what can you do besides simply repeat what is already there, hoping fervently (in my case) that you don't sound condescending?

Luckily I was saved this turmoil. After class when Rob approached me, I had forgot for a second what we were supposed to discuss, but then I remembered.

Me: "Oh yeah! We were going to look at the syllabus together real quick, right?"
Rob: "Um, I don't know..."
Me: "Well you were having a hard time figuring out what homework is due or when quizzes are, right?"
Rob: "Yeah, but... Oh wait, is that on the syllabus?!"

Sigh.
