name wackiness

There's always SOME kind of name wackiness with students - either wanting to be called something different than what's on the roll, not putting their last names on stuff (esp. freshman who think they're still in high school), etc.

This semester's treat: Marianna, who when I asked everyone the first day what they wanted to be called in class, said "Marianna is fine."

Then a week or so later I realized she was signing all her work/quizzes "Anna," and when she emailed me I saw that she signed "Anna" there, too. When she happened to stop by the office for something a few days later, I asked her which I should call her and she said, "Oh yeah, I guess Anna."

Since then no less than three times now in class when I've called "Anna" she just sits there until I switch to "Marianna."

No wonder their French audio comprehension is lacking if they can't even distinguish a shortened version of their own English-language name. Sigh.
