the roses among the thorns

Three, count 'em, THREE! experiences in a row with highly responsible and conscientious students! Crazy!

  1. Karmella, who had an appointment with me for later this morning, emailed me promptly when she realized she had a conflict, apologizing profusely. I got a couple of my tutor scheduling things mixed up yesterday (not so's I'd miss them but still, momentary lapses are a part of life) so I understood, especially since she was so great at contacting me in plenty of time. Woo hoo!

  2. Sarah, who had missed last week due to family death, brought all the anal docs I had asked for and more (included gas purchases on her credit card statement showing her drive to MO and back as well as a copy of the speeding ticket she got on the way, pobrecita) and didn't roll her eyes once! (Yes I required extra docs this time since it was a distant relative and the univ. recommends only immediate family death as valid excuse-wise; further almost all of us have had the standard fake grandmother death excuse given us at some point in our teaching careers so unfortunately for the honest ones we have to cover all bases.) Anyway all I had asked her for was a letter from a parent. I looked at everything she had included and said, "OK, fine." We talked about her grade compensation for the missed test and she started to leave saying, "Wow. That's it? I thought it would be a lot harder." I replied, "It is, for those who don't give what was asked for. I wish everyone were as thorough as you!"

  3. Tina from last semester wrote today asking if I'd do a rec. letter for her for grad school. Given that she's probably in my all time top ten responsible students list, of course she will get a glowing letter. (I must crow here about my rec. letters; they truly rock.) I was really glad to hear from her, really glad she asked, and mostly really glad to have yet another reminder that they aren't all lame and irresponsible and unjustifiably self-important.

Maybe there's hope for the world, yet.
