So today in an activity where they were supposed to list adjectives to describe their perfect roommate, one girl said her perfect roommate would be moche (ugly).
The class and I were a bit puzzled...
"Uhhh... what?" (one of those times when I figured it was a vocab problem so I actually went ahead and asked the class what "moche" meant, with a knowing eyebrow raise, expecting her to chime in with "Oh, no... " and give the word she meant to use).
But in this case the student went on to explain in English that if your roommate is ugly it will help your self-esteem. Probably most disturbing was the fact that when the rest of us chuckled (a bit hesitantly still) her earnest deadpan remained.

I can imagine a Paris Hilton-like student saying that all the while petting her complacent little Tinkerbell shoved in her $5,000 Vuitton purse. So maybe "ugly" roomates are the latest fashion accessory to make yourself look and feel better. That is so sad. . . and scary.
I know! - esp. here :) - creepy! tks for commenting!
