I think I entitled a post the same way last year once but I don't remember what it was. Weird.
This time it's because I again have one of those students (I get about one a year) who can't seem to remember how to spell their own last name.
Can I just say, What the HECK is UP with that??
OK, once means they were in a hurry or got interrupted, but back and forth, 2 different spellings throughout the semester? We've got trouble.
Either they really can't remember how to spell their name (and might I add it's usually on a name that seems pretty basic to me... this semester it's someone whose last name is "Foxx"... er, um, or maybe "Fox" since it depends on the day...) OR it's that they don't really care how their name is spelled.
Both theories are equally scary to yours truly.

Comments: long story but I had to hide them so here they are again copy/pasted:

That is plain crazy. I can see maybe screwing up another student's name or even a professor's name, but your OWN name? There are of course other theories to explain this strange (and hopefully rare) phenomenon. Student X had or once had a serious dalliance with psychotropic drugs. Student X is really a fugitive on the run and has assumed a relatively "common" pseudonym to forge his/her new identity as a "responsible" college student but is having a hard time keeping up the facade. Student X is just plain lazy and can't bother to recall his/her own genealogical roots. Or, Student X is a genius in identity theft. Watch out.
